hi, i was just wondering what you did this in- was it pencils or paint? It is absolutely stunning!! I am currently copying it for my art project and i was just wondering how you coloured it. :)

I was also wondering if you could give me any tips?? :)

  7. Well I used prismacolor softcore premier colored pencils but for the background and smoke and stuff I used turpenoid to make the colored pencils into a kind of paint. First I drew the horses in with colored pencil. Then I just colored the paper with pencils kind of making the smokey look and shapes I wanted in the sky. I like to use art stix (which are just thick colored pencils) for big areas. Prismacolor makes those too. Then I put a little turpenoid on a paper towel and started rubbing it onto the paper. It makes the pencil into a paint and you can mix it around however you want. It takes a bit of practice to get it to work the way you want it to but it sure is a lot of fun. Good luck and just have a good time with it. I did! Oh and make sure that when your finished you spray the picture with an acrylic finish. I use Krylon Crystal Clear acrylic coating. It will prevent the wax build up that happens over time with prismacolor pencils.

Thankyou soo much for replying! It is a great help! Do you know where i can buy some prismacolour softcore coloured pencils, art stix and turpenoid from?? :) I’ve drawn the outline of the horses in pencil and i was going to colour them in with coloured pencils and try and use chalk for the background… but if i can get that i will use it! Thankyou again, :)

Would normal colouring pencils (I’ve got derwent) be ok to use for the horses if not??

So, did you colour the horses and do the background, and then blend them together in the middle afterwards? I really like how you’ve shown the speed through the wispy manes and how the body fades into the background (e.g the legs) My project is on horses and for my final piece I was thinking of doing something like this of wild, free horses galloping; and I wanted to show the speed by doing detail on the horses and a messy, faded background merging into the horses. :)

  11. Yeah, I drew the detail stuff first and then just blended everything together. You can do it however you want though. You can add more details at any time. You should go to this site:

    http://gallery.prismacolor.com/gallery/home/

I think you’ll have to sign up for an account but there’s a lot of info there and a lot of other artists who use prismacolor stuff.

You can find out where they’re sold here: http://www.prismacolor.com/where-to-buy

  12. Oh by the way, I’ve never tried using Derwent pencils but I know they’re a good brand so they’d probably work. You can also use turpentine instead of turpenoid for the thinner if you want. I just don’t like the smell of turpentine. :)
